Almost as synonymous as it has become with life, Google is undoubtedly one of the most important requisites in today’s lifestyle. One will hardly come across someone who has not used or has not heard of Google. The famous search engine was incorporated in September, 1998 and has not looked back since. But do you know everything about Google? Probably not! Here are the most interesting facts about Google you did not know.
The Google Doodle
Google's famous homepage "Doodles" are well known and enjoyed by millions around the world as a way to mark an event or anniversary. But did you know that the very first Google Doodle was designed as a kind of "out of office" message?
In 1998 Brin and Page took the weekend off to go the Burning Man festival in Nevada. The Burning Man doodle, was designed by the Google guys and added to the homepage to let their users know they were out of office and couldn't fix technical issues like a server crash.
The Google Logo Was Not Centered Until 2001
Google's famously sparse homepage is considered a classic design in the online world. The Google logo, however, wasn't actually centered on the page until March 31, 2001. As early users will remember, the homepage had a bias to the left-hand side, and even earlier — back in 1998 — Google sported a Yahoo-style exclamation mark.
Google Rents Goats
Google rents goats from a company called California Grazing so as to naturally cut down on the weeds and grass in and around the Google headquarters. Google does not use land mowers and by renting about 200 goats, it keeps the environment quite natural and “cute.”
Google Is Dog Friendly
Google is a very dog friendly company. It has company dogs which accompany senior officials. Even lower level employees and officials are allowed to bring their dogs to work. The only rule is that the dogs should not soil the office carpets for more than what is acceptable and should not exhibit aggressive behavior. Dogs which are polite, toilet trained and friendly are more than welcome. Google’s Code of Conduct states that though it loves cats as well, they are not allowed in the office as Google is essentially a dog company!
The first Google Storage Was Made From LEGO
In 1996, when the first ever Google storage was to be built, there was no device that could support that much memory—the requirement was 40 GB at the time. So the founders put together ten 4 GB hard drives and assembled them using LEGO! This original Google LEGO storage does look funny but it is debated that the color of the LEGO bricks used then inspired the color of the modern Google logo.
